Authentic Reverse is a series of photographic self-portraits addressing the idea of free speech in contemporary western society as it is. Recurring to self-derision and humour, the project adresses issues of the possibility or impossibility of womens´ authentic self and authentic speech in a self-proclaimed democracy, where information and discourse are manipulated by media outlets, intelligence and entertainment agencies, marketing companies, politicians and the like.

In my opinion Woman does not own her speech.

How does Woman position hersef in this? How can she live authentically as a public figure or a private person? Where and how does society "situate" Woman? Is she really being empowered to say what she thinks about all matters concerning life and society? Does she not need to edit most of it in order to stay safe and carefree?

How do we navigate and manoeuvre in a world where appearances apparently dictate who we are, how others see us, and what the truth is?

Do we not actually live a big charade?

Raised by my mom, an actress in Portugal in the 70´s, 80´s and 90´s, my work recurringly dares play around the notions of private-public.

These selves are re-creations of original portraits made around the house and in my daily life and have thus become fun and weird compositions of  some public or private self I am not sure I identify with.

I have been using humour to deal with and survive most anthagonisms in life and in art, manifesting  "an acceptable authenticity and a possible wholeness" as woman, as mother and as artist.
